Register for at least eight, but preferably twelve. It may sound like a lot right now, don’t worry you’ll use them!!
Register for the same number of place settings as your dinnerware and glassware. Only one exception if you are registering for less than twelve place settings you may want to register for extra spoons. That is usually the most “used” utensil and ones you run out of most, too.
You should register for at least one “Hostess Set” which includes one large serving spoon, a serving ladle and sugar spoon. One “Serving Set” which includes a serving fork, butter knife and pierced serving spoon.

Here’s how the flatware are used

Fish Knife, in place of dinner or steak knife when fish is served

Butter Knife, butter pats, soft cheeses, chutneys and relishes

Dinner Knife
, all entrees except fish

Soup Spoon, desserts, cereal, soup or as small serving spoon

Teaspoon, coffee, tea, fruits and some desserts

Demitasse spoon, after-dinner coffee, condiments and caviar
